CDO has decided to change the abbreviation CDO to... CDO
The past decades have witnessed an interesting evolution in the use of the concept of 'development'. Thinking about development cooperation, decolonization, economic growth, Western values, etc., has given 'development' a dominant connotation that we would rather not see reflected in the name of our research center. In short, our level of 'wokeness' was no longer up to standard. While sustainability is also a contested concept, we don’t want to abandon it but instead continue to embrace its political character. For pragmatic and historical reasons, we have decided to keep the 'strong brand CDO,' but from now on, it stands for "Centrum voor Duurzaamheidsonderzoek" (and not the old "Centrum voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling"), or in English "Centre for Sustainability Studies" (and not the old: "Centre for Sustainable Development"). We are currently considering a slogan or subtitle that would serve as an essential complement. Words such as critical, politics, futures, and transformations could be part of this, but we are also open to all suggestions
