An indivisible set of sustainability goals: SDGs in research and education at UGent
De Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen (Sustainable Development Goals of SDG’s) van de Verenigde Naties worden meer en meer gebruikt als overkoepelend kader om een duurzaamheidsdenken in de werking van overheden en andere organisaties te verankeren. Deze wereldwijde doelstellingen bevatten 17 hoofddoelstellingen waarbij 2030 fungeert als tijdshorizon. Hoewel de SDG’s een welbepaald veranderingspotentieel in zich dragen, merken we in de praktijk talrijke valkuilen die ervoor zorgen dat dit instrument in hoofdzaak een status quo lijkt te dienen. Het is dan ook essentieel dat we ons als UGent trachten te positioneren in dit debat vanuit een kritisch, maar constructief perspectief.
Deze tekst (Nederlands) werd door Thomas Block opgemaakt op vraag van rector Rik Van de Walle en vice-rector Mieke Van Herreweghe, alsook ter discussie voorgelegd aan en goedgekeurd door de Onderzoeksraad (27 augustus 2020) en Onderwijsraad (8 oktober 2020) van UGent. Alvorens te schetsen hoe UGent kan omgaan met de Duurzame Ontwikkelingsdoelen (SDG’s), wordt eerst nog even stil gestaan bij de basiscomponenten van duurzame ontwikkeling en bij enkele brede duurzaamheidsperspectieven. De tekst tracht de basis te leggen voor een brede visie en wordt afgerond met enkele algemene tips voor onderzoekers en docenten die de SDG’s willen gebruiken in hun onderzoek of onderwijs.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are increasingly being used as an overarching framework to embed sustainability thinking into the operations of governments and other organisations. These global goals contain 17 main objectives with 2030 as their time horizon. Although the SDGs carry a certain potential for change, in practice we notice numerous pitfalls that make this instrument seem to serve mainly the status quo. Therefore, it is essential that we, as UGent, try to position ourselves in this debate from a critical, yet constructive perspective. Before outlining how we, as a university, can deal with the SDGs, we will, for a good understanding of our proposal, first dwell on the basic components of sustainable development and on some broad sustainability perspectives. This contribution attempts to lay the foundations for a UGent vision. We conclude with some general tips for researchers and teachers who want to use the SDGs in their research or teaching.
