Abstract
Old industrial ports have become desolate locations. The waterfronts close to the city centre were in decline. in recent years cities have rediscovered the potential of those abandoned industrial sites at the waterside.
Small and medium sized cities see how those desolate port locations in amongst others London, Amsterdam and New York were redeveloped into creative urban neighbourhoods. That's why they also make plans voor their old ports. 8 Dutch and Belgian cities have participated in een cooperative project on the revitalisation of old industry ports (in Dutch: revitaliseren van oude industriehavens or ROI). Gent, Antwerpen, Hasselt Leuven, Oostende have become together with Tilburg, Roermond and Vlissingen partner cities in the ROI-project.
Those 8 cities all seize the opportunity to develop a new city district on the old harbour locations. They invest in public architecture to make those sites accessible. Their major challenge is give room for the new Waterfront developments, as well physically in the city area as mentally in the head of the inhabitants.
